“What’s Left?” in documentary competition at Cinemania!
-Donato Rotunno’s “What’s Left?” is crossing the Atlantic and will be screened in Montreal on 8 November as part of the documentary competition at the Cinemania festival in Quebec. After France, Luxembourg, Belgium, the Czech Republic and Italy, it is now the turn of Canadians to discover the ninth documentary by the Luxembourgish director, produced by Tarantula Luxembourg and supported by the Film Fund Luxembourg, with the participation of the Circolo Culturale e Recreativo Eugenio Curiel.
The film was shot in Luxembourg over several periods between December 2022 (when the Circolo Curiel closed) and January 2024 (when the building was demolished), including June 2023 at Filmland Studios in Kehlen. The film features Luxembourg politicians who spent time at the Circolo Curiel, such as Claude Turmes, Corinne Cahen, Mars di Bartolomeo, David Wagner, cultural figures such as Enrico Lunghi (former director of Mudam) and Alexis Juncosa (artistic director of LuxFilmFest), as well as long-standing members of the association, such as Giovanni Grilli, a founding member of Curiel, former communist activist and witness to the political evolution of the association; or Franco Barilozzi, founder of the Festival of Migration, Culture and Citizenship, and former president of Circolo Curiel, where he served as a link between the Italian community and other foreign communities in Luxembourg for many years.
The documentary explores how the Circolo Curiel, despite its trattoria appearance, has had a major influence on political and cultural life in Luxembourg.
