“STREAMS” in official competition at Locarno Film Festival!

Tarantula is very pleased with the selection of Mehdi Hmili’s film “STREAMS” in official competition in the Concorso Cineasti del presente section of the 74th Locarno Film Festival.

 

“Streams” was produced by Yol Film House (Tunisia), in co-production with MPM Film (France) and Tarantula Luxembourg. The Tunisian director’s second feature film was supported by the Film Fund Luxembourg, the CNCI and the Ministry of Cultural Affairs (Tunisia) and the CNC (France). The film was shot in autumn 2019 in Tunisia. All the sound post-production was done in Luxembourg.

 

Mehdi Hmili and Donato Rotunno met at the Atelier Grand Nord in Quebec, around the development of “Streams” and “Io sto bene”. From this meeting, their artistic collaboration was born.

 

“Streams” tells the story of Amel, wrongly accused, is released from prison after a case of adultery and prostitution. In the underworld of Tunis, she searches for her missing son Moumen. In the course of her journey, Amel comes face to face with a Tunisian society in free fall.

 

Mehdi Hmili is a Tunisian director, screenwriter and producer. He studied cinema in Paris. He directed three short films in France about love and exile, X-Moment, Li-La and La Nuit de Badr. In 2016, he released his first feature film Thala Mon Amour, a love story set during the Tunisian revolution. He co-founded with Moufida Fedhila in Tunis Yol Film House and produced several award-winning fiction and documentary films in various international festivals. In 2019, he is participating in the Cannes Film Festival’s La Fabrique des Cinémas du Monde with the feature documentary Fouledh, also in co-production with Tarantula. He has just finished his second feature film Streams. Mehdi Hmili is part of the new wave of young Tunisian filmmakers and is a major figure in the current Tunisian film landscape. He lives and works between Tunis and Paris.

 

“STREAMS” will be released in Luxembourg on 15 September 2021.
